Classes

QCT’s education program, open to students of all ages, is dedicated to providing innovative arts education instruction, high-quality student production work, and mentorship opportunities for our community’s emerging theatre artists.

QCT’s friendly and expert staff instructors ensure the highest level of engagement and challenge for students at every skill level; whether you are a first-timer or a veteran performer, great arts education can inspire confidence, improve creative problem-solving, and exercise collaboration skills unlike any other discipline.

Classes are typically offered in the spring (February-March), summer (June-July) and fall (October-November); special sessions, workshops and/or masterclasses are programmed throughout the year on a rolling basis. No prior theatre experience is required unless specified in the class description.

Grades K-2

QCT Kids’ Company – Dynamic Drama!

Instructor: Marion Dye
Thursdays | Feb. 29 – Mar. 21 | 4:40-5:30pm

Introduce your young actor to the world of theatre!  Students will have fun bringing some favorite children’s books and fairytale characters to life. We’ll engage in active stories, imaginative play, and fun games. We will explore drama activities that grow literary comprehension, self-confidence, and collaborative skills.

Puppetry: Construction & Play

Instructor: Marion Dye
Thursdays | Feb. 29 – Mar. 21 | 5:30-6:30pm

Did you know that just about anything can become a puppet? From kitchen utensils to socks …and even from the recycling bin! Let’s get creative with both art and theatre as we learn how to design and make a found-object puppet character, and then explore drama as we learn to act and react with our puppets!

Grades 5-8

Character Acting Intensive

Instructor: Megan Masterman
Tuesdays | Feb. 27 – Mar. 19 | 6:00-7:00pm

We’ll spend 4 weeks studying character archetypes, movement techniques, and guided improvisation you can use to feel comfortable and prepared walking into your next audition, cold read, or role.

Workshops

Musical Theatre Dance for Beginners: Auditioning Tips and Tricks!

Jazz squares, pivot turns, and chassé’s – oh my! Ever feel a little scared by the dance part of musical theatre auditions? Join leading dance instructor and musical theatre choreographer Cheryl Kaiser and learn the basic steps and mindset to do well in just about any musical theatre audition!

Basic Sewing Skills – Ages 13+

Have you ever said, “I wish I knew how to sew!”? Well, learn how with Costume Shop Manager Jayden Dreyer! In this class you will learn how to hand sew, basic sewing machine skills, and how to do minor alterations on clothing! All supplies will be provided and no experience necessary!

Scenic Painting – Ages 15+

Instructor: Harrison Clarke
Mondays & Wednesdays | Feb. 26 – Mar. 20 | 6:00-8:30pm

Learn various painting techniques that scenic designers use to bring worlds to life on stage. Assistant Technical Director Harrison Clarke leads this hands-on class. Make sure you wear clothes that you don’t mind getting messy!

Newsies Audition Prep

NEWSIES Audition Prep Dance Classes

Instructor: Cheryl Kaiser
Saturdays | March 2, 9, 16, 23; April 6, 13, 20, 27 | 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM
Location: Kaiser Dance Studio, 300 Maine Street, Quincy, IL
Tuition: FREE

Men ages 15-30 are welcome to participate in a weekly dance class to prepare for NEWSIES auditions! Skills and techniques will build off of the previous week; however, students are welcome to attend one class or all of the classes. Advanced registration is preferred each week.  

Students participating should wear casual clothing that allows for movement and either jazz shoes or socks. 

Please note that these classes are to help potential male actors prepare for NEWSIES auditions. These classes are neither an audition nor a rehearsal, and the ability to participate has no bearing on casting.
