December Spotlight: Melissa Griswold & Justin Twaddle

We’re shining our December Spotlight on Melissa Griswold and Justin Twaddle, two longtime volunteers who will join the QCT Board of Directors in 2026. Both have worn a variety of hats over the years—onstage, backstage, and behind the scenes—bringing their time, talent, and steady commitment to the organization. As they prepare to step into new leadership roles, we’ll learn more about their journeys with QCT, what inspires their service, and what they’re excited to help shape in the years ahead.

How did you first become involved with QCT?

Melissa – A friend invited me to audition with her for MAMMA MIA in 2018, and I decided to give it a try. I’m so glad I did. Every experience I’ve had with QCT since then has been incredibly rewarding.

Justin –  After my daughter, Lily, was in TARZAN in 2017, she fell in love with the theatre, and my wife and I wanted to do everything we could to encourage that, so we ended up helping out in whatever way we could.

What has been your most memorable moment volunteering at QCT?

Melissa – There was something truly magical about performing in BEAUTY AND THE BEAST during the holiday season. My favorite part was seeing little girls in their Belle costumes, completely captivated by the story. Their excitement reminded me how special live theater can be.

Justin – Probably being part of the cast and assisting the crew on LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE.  Getting to do that with two of my daughters was pretty special.

If you could play any role in any play or musical, what would it be and why?

Melissa – I would love to play a fun female villain. It would be such an exciting chance to step completely out of character and lean into someone bold, mischievous, and a little over-the-top. Getting to play a character who is dramatic, fiery, and delightfully wicked would be a fun challenge!

Justin – My family will tell you I’m a huge fan of LES MISERABLES because it is a story about the power of grace. So, I would say Jean Valjean or Javert, although I might be a natural to play Dewey Finn in SCHOOL OF ROCK.  Playing George Washington in HAMILTON would also be a blast.

You’ve been involved with QCT in various volunteer roles. How do those experiences shape the perspective you bring to the board?

Melissa – Being part of a cast completely transformed how I view live theater. You gain a deep appreciation for the teamwork involved: from set changes and vocals to the many offstage roles that keep a production running. I’m continually inspired by the generosity of volunteers who give their time and talents so freely, and that perspective guides how I approach board decisions.

Justin – I think it brings a broad understanding of how many people it takes and the resources necessary to pull off the mission of QCT.  We need all hands on deck – staff, performers, supporters – to make everything work and provide high-quality productions and education for the communities we serve.

If QCT could produce any show with an unlimited budget, what would you choose and why?

Melissa – I would choose the Disney classic ALADDIN. With an unlimited budget, we could truly bring the magic to life with soaring flying carpets, dazzling transformations, and vibrant, shimmering costumes. It would be an incredible spectacle for audiences of all ages.

Justin – HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD, just because of the amount of technical effects that go into that show.

What’s one thing you wish the audience knew about what goes on behind the scenes?

Melissa – Before joining a QCT production, I had no idea how much coordination happens backstage from set changes, costume changes, lighting cues, microphones, and so much more. Now that I’ve been involved, I watch performances completely differently, and with even greater appreciation for the artistry and organization behind the curtain. I wish all audience members could experience the behind-the-curtain view.

Justin – I would say the ingenuity and thoughtfulness to use and reuse props, set pieces, and costumes. We hold onto everything that we think might be useful in a future production.

Is there any area of volunteering that you haven’t tried yet, but would like to?

Melissa – I haven’t worked in the main office yet, and I think helping with ticket sales would be a fun way to interact with patrons and support the front-of-house experience.

Justin – I have always thought about trying out the sound booth, but it takes so long to learn; I just haven’t devoted the time to it.

How do you hope to make an impact during your time on the board?

Melissa – As a finance professor and former business owner, I naturally gravitate toward the financial side of board work. I hope to help maintain and strengthen our financial stability, maximize the impact of our resources, and help ensure that every dollar is used as efficiently and effectively as possible.

Justin – I think the number one thing I bring is passion – a passion to see people be connected and to work together to accomplish a mission. I hope I can serve the staff, volunteers, and the community well in that way.

When you think about QCT’s role in the community, what impact do you hope we’ll have in the future?

Melissa – I hope QCT continues to reach new audiences and introduce even more people to the joy, inspiration, and sense of community that live theater brings.

Justin – QCT’s role is to continue to enrich our community by providing a platform for local artists to share their talents, take part in telling stories, and create with others.  Our role is to also educate our community on the power of theatre and the arts, and to encourage young artists to develop their gifts and grow in their skills.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about volunteering at QCT?

Melissa – It’s an incredibly fun and rewarding experience. You’ll meet wonderful people, learn new skills, and become part of a creative community that truly values its volunteers. I’d absolutely encourage anyone to give it a try.

Justin – I think I would say don’t be afraid. There are so many unique ways to get involved and be part of the work, and you can do so in one of the most welcoming and encouraging groups of people I have ever been around!
