Burgundy’s Blog: Third Place
In his book The Great Good Place, Ray Oldenburg defines the social theory surrounding the third place. Oldenburg called your home and the people you live with your “first place.” Your workplace, where most people spend most of their time, is your “second place.” Your “third place” is the anchor of your community life. Oldenburg says it’s where you “encounter familiar faces and make new acquaintances.” It could be your church, gym, park, or café.
I have to be honest, I haven’t read Oldenburg’s book, but the idea of this third place has been with me for a while. Oldenburg thinks of these spaces as anchors for community life. It is how I’ve come to define QCT. For me, it is a space where the impact and the experience extend well beyond the space itself and is far greater than the sum of its parts.
And this is where the idea for Ultimate Cast Party came from. We invite you back to your third space and celebrate the community that surrounds it. Here are some frequently asked questions about the event:
It’s been a few years since I’ve been involved. Can I still come?
YES! Whether you were most recently involved in RENT or your connection is from the Little Theatre days, this party is to celebrate you. Your involvement doesn’t have an expiration date on it.
What should I wear?
It’s casual; no need to dress up. Wear whatever makes you comfortable.
Do I need to bring anything?
Nope. We will have some hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.
Can I bring my kids?
All are welcome!
I’ve not been on stage, but I’ve been involved with other parts of the theatre. Can I still come?
Yes! A cast party celebrates the entire company for a show. This party is to celebrate volunteers in all areas.
I’ve been to some pretty great cast parties. What makes this one the ultimate one?
It’s 100 years in the making!

When and where is it?
